The Measles, Glass Harp, James Gang, the Numbers Band

These bands played mostly at J.B.'s on Water Street. Great playing, great singing, great grooves and beer, a spud's delight.
Remember:
the Kove, the Loft, the Robin Hood and the other bars I've forgotten.
Remember
Fred Weber, Jeff Curry, Bob Webb, Mary Measle, Buddy, Dave, The Numbers Band cast; Bob and Jack Kidney, Terry Hynde, Chris Butler, Jerry Casale, Fred Trabuzzo, David Robinson, Michael Staley, etc. Joe Walsh, Tom Kriss, Jimmy Foxx, Phil Keaggy and everyone else I've forgotten again.

The James Gang's Last Prom

As we all know, The James Gang played continuously all
over Northeastern Ohio.

When their first album was released, their travel
increased, and they were beginning to play large
venues, either as an opening act for groups on tour or
as headliners.

Joe was living in Kent, and I saw him pretty often,
mostly due to his relationship with Joe Masseria, who
I worked for at Halcyon days clothes store.

One weekend, we found out that The James Gang was
scheduled to play the senior prom at mentor High
School near Cleveland. They weren't really accepting
that kind of gig anymore, but maybe they had booked it
a long time before, or the money was good or
something, so they went ahead and played.

Joe invited some pals from Kent up, in the guise of
roadies even though we weren't, and off we went to the
school gymnasium. I know Pete Gregg was there, and
maybe some others on the blog?

Young David (me) was inspired to ingest some sort of
psychedellic substance, and the sea of taffeta dresses
and powder blue tuxes of the prom attendees, combined
with the swell decorations in the gym ( I think the
theme was " A Night in Hell"), certainly added a weird
pizzaz to the visual aspects of my perceptions.

The James Gang did a nice long set and took their
break

I first met Terry Hynde in 1965 when I was a freshman at Kent. He was one of the first musicians I had met who was into jazz. We called him Terry "bebop" Hynde. Years later, we were reunited when I produced an album for 15-60-75, the Numbers Band along with Freddie Salem, who paid for the recordings and also played some guitar on the sessions. Terry had introduced me to a woman fan of the band, Carol Pare, who later became my second wife. The circles just keep getting smaller.

Hi all, and thanks for this great blog. I am a 24 year old graduate student and writer with a strong interest in northeastern Ohio's music scene during this era. In spite of the fact that I obviously never lived it, I've always felt like I belonged back there with you all instead of my generation of losers.

My father, Mark Frazier, was the drummer in Lacewing (formerly the Measles) starting in late 1969. I grew up in Kent, and have heard all of his stories about what it was like to play music in Kent during such a pivotal, historical time. He vividly recalls playing at J.B.'s the night of the riots on Water Street, and how he and my mother were about to go outside to see if her car was okay when Joe Bujack pulled them back instead the door just as the cops threw tear gas into the road. I loved reading the story someone posted about the concert at Tri-Towers because I've heard that one, too. My dad says that they threatened to break their equipment, and he was horrified. His drums were his life.

Anyway, all this stuff is fascinating to read. I've read as much as I possibly can and acquired a ton of local music on vinyl, CD, and mp3. I can't walk downtown when I'm at home without thinking about everything that went on there. Last month I had the chance to go see the incredible Glass Harp at the new incarnation of J.B.'s. My mother and uncles went with me, for the first time in thirty years. They said it was surreal.

For anyone who has iTunes and is unaware of this, I'll add that Lacewing and December's Children's albums are available there to download. Quality is a little scratchy, like someone uploaded it from the vinyl. But still, it was a great chance to here both my father's music and another great area band - and for you all who lived it, it'll be a great nostalgia trip for sure. Thanks again.

Things I remember:
James Gang early days in Kent, mostly at the Kove. Especially remember Joe Walsh singing and playing guitar alone a version of "Elusive Butterfly".

Smoking Js with Fox and Joe W during their breaks.

Following Lacewing everywhere because not only did I love their music with Mary and Pecchio, etc, but I had a big crush on Bob Webb since seeing him first in the "Comin Generation" from Alliance OH. We became friends but lost touch when I moved from OH to California in 1969

Going to a gig in Youngstown, OH when Phil Keaggy was playing with the "Volume Four". As Phil was singing "Eleanor Rigby", I sat on the stage, knocked his microphone into his mouth and chipped his tooth. I felt so bad and so stupid, but Phil's manners were and probably still are as exemplary as his guitar playing.

Going to the Freakout in Younstown whenever the Human Beinz, Pied Pipers or Poppy were playing. Love those bands too.

Boy, I miss that music, those great musicians, the people they were, and the "good old days"....

I was an original member of The Measles from the fall of 1965 to the spring of '66, when the band decided to "become a foursome" and I was released. I sang and played tambourine with them during those early days. Joe was my roommate at KSU at the time with Buddy Bennett living at another dorm closeby. Larry Lewis played rhythm guitar and Bobby Sepulveda played Bass. We were the only local band with tight 3 and 4 part harmonies at the time. Joe was a great vocals teacher and I started my lifelong love of guitar playing because of him. Mike Williams

If one is investigating the wonderful musical climate that was Kent back in the mid-late 60's you have to include The Turnkeys in any discussion with the Goldwaithes in the band.
What a wonderful place Kent was to be in and be a part fo that great music scene! Those times and those bands had such an impact on so many-myslef included and they stay with me to this day.

Don't know if anyone will read this because it looks like it has been awhile since someone has posted anything. Well, I just wanted to say that I do remember when the Measles first started back in 1965. I was attending a dance called the J-teens at Highland High School in Ravenna, Ohio and all I can remember is that this group made a great impression on us teens. I am living in Switzerland now and was listening to a Cleveland channel on the radio and the name "James Gang" came up and then the memories started coming back. So I googled to see if I could find some info on the "Measles" and "James Gang". I remember that this group brought so much joy to a lot of teens because the other local groups were kind of boring at the time.

I spent 66 to 70 at the bars in Kent. I remember all the bands mentioned. I spent most of my time at the 5th Qaurter. My favorite band was Pinley Thinstripe. Any one remember them. Mary and the Measles were great. Sugar and Spice were an r& b band that really made it. What a wonderful time Of course I loved the James Gang JB's and The Kove. Email me if you remember any of these bands

Saw the Measles open for Sam the Sham and the Pharohs and Paul Revere and the Raiders at the Canton Auditorium in early 1966. WHAT A SHOW!!

I was at the Mentor High School Prom that year. I was a Junior. I'll never forget dancing to "Funk 49". Later saw Joe at the Crossroads Festival in Dallas (Eric Clapton)....I miss those days and the fantastic music.

I just discovered this blog, don't know how old it is.
I got a call from Buddy and Bobby in 1971 to become the organist for The Measles (yes, back then, I was an organist, before we all became "keyboard players") and, at the time, the line up was, from stage right to left, Bob Baird on bass, Buddy Bennett on drums, Bobby Sepulveda on vocals/guitar/trumpet, Tom Clapsaddle on lead guitar, and me on organ and later other keyboards, guitar, and sax. Tom left, to be replaced by Mike Delaney, and we added Mary Sterpka back to sing with Bobby. We later added a singer named "Jaye" (don't remember her last name}, who was only with us briefly, before the band just flamed-out, somewhere around 1976 or 1977. I was saddened when The Dome came toppling down several years ago, as it was "home" for quite a long time.

I was killing time on the PC and somehow fell into this site. Oh my God. What a series of flashbacks! The Dome and JBs were my home nearly every Fri. and Sat. night. Our group would always have at least a half dozen tables pushed together at the Dome till closing then off to East Park for breakfast.I remember all the names and places. I couldn't help noticing the band "Featherstitch" is missing from all the tangents. I knew Delaney and "Wizard" Williger from The Measels and along with Frazier from Featherstitch. (I ran around with Frazier's brother-in-law all through school). I have 40+ year old tapes of the Measels (featuring "George" singing Wild Thing from his wheelchair) and the final Featherstitch concert from JBs (featuring Delaney trying to hit a high C) with both putting a real hurt on your ears. Unfortunatly they got packed away 30+ years ago. When I find them I'll make them available for a good laugh! I went to J Teens underage at my alma mater Highland Elementary and was at JBs and the Kove during several of Joe Walsh's "pop ins". Thanks to the bloggers and musicians for the memories and flashbacks. FYI, Hai Muradian (Harry Featherstitch) has a Ravelers site and the Featherstitch album is on John Charleston's site.

In the event you start off feeling cramping, you ought to get a large glass water and drink it. Take a break from what you are undertaking and then try to lay out and loosen up. Dehydration and anxiety can help deliver on cramping and taking this motion can help them stop. If, nonetheless, they do not end right after achieving this, you might like to contact your medical doctor. Foli342334o

Well, this is Bobby Sepulveda, bass player, vocalist and one of the original members of the Measles.
Cool to read the comments of the past. If anyone has any pictures or recording of the original Measles with Joe, Larry Buddy and myself, please contact me at badgemusic@gmail.com
The Dome had one of the biggest crowds we played at, from 72 to 77. I still have the original voice of the theater speakers, that hung from the ceiling. Take care ...Bobby

I remember the first night I went to the 5th Quarter to see the Lemonpipers who came up from Cincinnati area. The opening act and new house band at 5Q was a group from New Jersey who had just changed their name to the Pinley Thinstripe. They were better than the Lemonpipers and stayed at the 5Q for several months in '68/69. They were the first band to do psychedelic stuff like Hendrix & Vanilla Fudge. I think that they were formerly known as Richard & the Young Lions and had a "hit" a couple years earlier. During their run at the 5th Quarter, the released their version of "I Love You", song that the band People from the Bay Area had some success with at the same time.
